In my rebellious teenager phase, I found Coco as a cure.

Coco started with a fiery passion for music of Miguel, a 12-year-old Mexican boy raised in a family with strict music forbidden due to a past tragedy. After being trapped in the Land of the Dead by accident on Dia de los Muertos day, a day to remember the deceased relatives of the Mexican, he started his journey of realizing the truth behind success and even more than that – the most beautiful and irreplaceable role of his family.

Firstly, Coco hit me with “follow your heart and seize your moment”…

The film walked me through how Miguel cherished his burning dream – he hid it in his small garret, learned how to adjust the strings of his old guitar by himself, and looked up to Ernesto de la Cruz, a music legendary, with the most admiring eyes. At that time, I was still a stubborn 16-year-old girl and protecting my dreams against my family was actually more of protecting my ego. I’ve always shouted back at my mom for not supporting my passion, but had never proved why that desire was valid, and never appreciated it the way it should have been like what Miguel did. Like an alarm for my obstinate self, Coco taught me to “seize your moment”. I started to nourish my dreams through little everyday-things. I wrote my blogs, applied in different school clubs, taken a part in various social events and it paid off at last, as I am writing this as a communication student – what I have always wanted to be, with full respect and support from my family.

…But most importantly, it taught me that nothing deserves being honored than the love of my family.

At last, Miguel realized that even beyond his music passion, family and the beautiful memories it brings will always be the most precious thing that we have to remember forever. I learned that no matter how flashy the outside world would seem, at the end of the day, it will always be my family who has the warmest embrace and the most unconditional love for me through life’s ups and downs. Although they may be clumsy to express their affection towards us sometimes, trust me – they will never stop wishing you the most wonderful things, and my hard-headed self should never have taken that care as a battle.

‘…for ever if I’m far away,

I hold you in my heart.’

Who would have known an animated movie can make such an enormous change to my life like that! What about you? Do you mind telling me the type of media that had moved your life like what Coco did to mine?
